Some things could never have existed and my life wouldn’t have changed, like women’s rights or condoms. Other things actually impacted my life. Perhaps, equally important to my development as the discovery of food was my first playthrough of Half-Life.

If you’ve played the game then you can understand why when given the choice between skull fucking aliens with a crowbar or doing something outdoors to make my father not regret having me, I donned the HEV suit and reigned down mighty blows upon the creatures of Xen (while my father stood outside alone holding a baseball glove).

For those who never experienced Half-Life and feel like it’s too late to go back, then you’re in luck. Thanks to the Black Mesa development team a remake of Half-Life is in the works, aptly titled Black Mesa. It’ll be a free total conversion mod for Half-Life 2, incorporating a ‘new and more engrossing in-game world.’

From what I can tell so far, it should give us all a new reason to ignore our loved ones or dying grandparent’s deathbed wishes (just keep breathing for 5 more minutes, I’m fighting Headcrabs!).

Yes I know, trying to convince even the fattest, loneliest, LARPingly fanatical gamer to play a graphically hindered game from the 90’s is virtually impossible; almost as impossible as talking your significant other into giving you a blumpkin (or reverse blumpkin for the ladies out there).

But this remake of Half-Life using the newer Half-Life 2 engine, enhanced gameplay and built with some serious dedication to the original style, promises to offer those who missed out a second shot at greatness. Or at the very least, a reason to pull the gun out of their lips for as long as it takes to beat this new mod.

The release date has only been narrowed down to “when it’s done”, but I’d suggest you start following them now. Go to www.blackmesasource.com to keep updated on their progress. When it comes out, grab a copy and see what helped shaped me to become kickass crowbar wielding maniac I am today.

    Dear Rick Rollins,
    Your “life” is extremely pointless and poorly lived (insert semi colon here to prove that I graduated grade 11 English and know what the fuck a semi colon grammatically achieves); perhaps instead of masturbating to Saturday morning cartoons you should take more interest in getting the hell out of your parent’s basement and make an attempt to get a life.
