Mega Man's upgrade after defeating Dimebag Darrell ( ...still too soon?)

The next best thing to video games is sex. But since most of you wouldn’t know about that, let’s dive into the world of video game music cover bands.

Game music a surprisingly big genre (Sometimes referred to as Nerd-core). Jump onto a few of these sites and give their tracks a listen, if you’re a real gamer you won’t be disappointed.

Metroid Metal1 Game Music Cover Bands That RockStemage: These guys are one of the greatest things to happen to music since James Hetfields’ balls dropped. Their heavy metal covers of Super Metroid are  awesome. Any fan of the Metroid series should head to their site at MetroidMetal.com and grab some free copies of their covers. From the intro theme for Metroid Prime to their recently released ending for Super Metroid these covers will leave you with that ‘satisfied with your past’ nostalgic feeling, even if you haven’t played Metroid since before you figured out how to play with your fun bits.

Listen to them at: metroidmetal.com and stemage.com

NESkimos Game Music Cover Bands That RockNESkimos: Next to the repressed memories of your uncle molesting you, the most powerful memory you have tucked away is probably playing NES and SNES games as a kid. The NESkimos have some pretty sick heavy metal covers of Mega Man boss music, like Spark man and Snake man. Their crowning jewel is a cover of Link to the Past’s Dark World track. If can listen to that without considering plugging in the old SNES than you probably shouldn’t be wasting your time at work reading this site.

Their site (forum active, site sucks): neskimoforums.com

TheOneUps Game Music Cover Bands That RockThe OneUps: If you’re into Jazz then you’ll want to hit The OneUps for their game inspired sound. They’ve covered a wide variety of different games all with a Lounge Style. Personally, I wouldn’t play this music in public but since most of you spend your time alone anyways that shouldn’t make too much of a difference to your listening habits.

Listen to them at: myspace.com/theoneups and theoneups.com

The Advantage Game Music Cover Bands That RockThe Advantage: The Advantage is probably one of the most recognizable names in the geeky video game music cover band category. They have a ton of self released albums, each brimming with songs from all sorts of games like Contra, Mega Man, FZero*  Contra and way more. They have a good indie rock vibe too so it makes for some good background music while you drink Mountain Dew and vacuum Pringle crumbs off your sweaty gut.

These few bands are my favorite,  but this list is just the first level in the genre. Video game cover music rocks and the fact that most of it’s FREE helps support that fact. So go grab some tracks and play them alone in the dark when your roommates aren’t home and never talk about it in public (basically the same thing you do when exploring your deviant sexual fetishes).

*corrected, my fact checking team was out stalking people that night

These are definitely some great bands to get people started with. I could recommend a ton more but you don’t want to get overwhelmed too soon I’m sure!

Also, not a big deal, but a slight nitpick, “nerdcore” tends to refer to artists who rap about video games and other nerdy subjects, which is also awesome. check out Action Adventure World, My Parent’s Favorite Music, and Dual Core for that angle.

Anyway, good call on all the bands. These are most of the ones I started out with too and remain favorites of mine to this day! Keep digging around and you are sure to find a ton more with dozens of varied styles, genres, and influences.
